Clouds on Saturn, Cassini image. Saturn is a large gas giant planet, with an atmosphere that is mostly hydrogen and helium. In this view, neighbouring bands of clouds are moving at different speeds and directions depending on their latitudes. This generates turbulence where bands meet and leads to the wavy structure along the interfaces. This area of clouds is centred on 46 degrees north latitude on Saturn. The image was taken from a distance of around 1.2 million kilometres, using a combination of near-infrared spectral filters. It was obtained on 18 May 2017, with the narrow-angle camera of Cassini's Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS). The Cassini spacecraft has been surveying the Saturnian system since 2004, with its mission scheduled to end in September 2017. | |
