Osteoclast on dentine, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Osteoclasts are cells that resorb bone tissue. Here, this osteoclast has formed a resorption pit in the dentine tissue of a tooth. A membrane-staining technique has revealed the specialized cell membrane (ruffled border) between the surface of the cell and the dentine. The oval area is the cell nucleus. This sectioned view was obtained using a block-face serial sectioning system. Magnification: x2440 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
