Osteocyte bone cells, confocal fluorescence light micrograph. Osteocytes are mature bone cells. They develop from osteoblasts, and become embedded in the bone matrix as it develops, with long cytoplasmic extensions reaching into the bone tissue. The osteocytes help maintain the bone tissue by replacing old bone and minerals. These osteocytes are from the calvarial (cranium) bone of a five-day-old mouse. The fluorescent stain used here is TRITC-phalloidin, which binds specifically to F-actin, a protein that is part of a cell's cytoskeleton. This is a maximum intensity projection (MIP) image. A MIP image displays 3D data by projecting the regions that have maximum intensity. | |
