Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen (1918-2015), Danish American physiologist, with her children (left to right) Mimi, Bent and Astrid looking over study materials being taken with them to the Sahara. Schmidt-Nielsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She received her Doctor of Odontology in 1946, the first Danish woman to do so. The same year she moved to the US to take up research positions, becoming associate research professor at Duke University, North Carolina (1957-1964) and Professor of Biology at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio (1964-1971). She is best known for her research into water balance in desert mammals. She was the first woman to be President of the American Physiological Association (1975-1976). | |
