Neanderthal animal fossil excavation. Close-up of a researcher carrying out excavations for prehistoric human and animal fossils in the La Buena Pinta cave at the Pinilla del Valle site, in the Lozoya Valley, near Madrid, Spain. This is a bone from a bovid (an animal related to modern cows, sheep and antelopes). Several Neanderthal fossils have been found here. The animal fossils show the environment the Neanderthals lived in. Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) inhabited Europe and western Asia between 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. Excavations have been taking place here every summer for over a decade since around 2002. | |
