Illustration of the German theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546) directing the posting of his 95 Theses on the door of the church at Wittenburg on 31st October 1517. The 95 Theses explains Luther's opposition to the Catholic church selling plenary indulgences, the remission of punishment for a sin through giving money to the church. This act is seen as the start of the Protestant Reformation. Luther was excommunicated in 1521. Luther translated the Bible into German, and his hymns inspired the development of singing in churches. | |
