Leonardo da Vinci's armoured car and a tank. Illustration comparing the armoured car (left) invented by Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452- 1519), with an M60 A2, a variant of the US Army's M60 Patton battle tank, produced between 1960 and 1987. Leonardo's armoured car was circular in shape, had guns, and was designed to have a crew of eight people. A ladder would have been used to access an observation platform. The M60 Patton moves on tank treads. It has a crew of four, with its main weapons being a powerful tank gun and machine guns. Many of Leonardo's designs remained unbuilt, but foreshadowed modern inventions. | |
