Leonardo da Vinci inventions. Illustration of four designs by the the Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452- 1519). Clockwise from upper left, they are: an assault chariot, an armoured vehicle or tank, a bicycle and an ornithopter. The chariot has a mechanism of scythes to slice through enemy ranks. The tank had guns and was designed to have a crew of eight people. The bicycle was a sketch re-discovered in the 1970s (the modern bike was invented in the 19th century). The wings of his ornithopter were designed to be flapped using a system of levers and cords. Many of Leonardo's designs remained unbuilt, but foreshadowed modern inventions. | |
