Early baby incubator, illustration. The first baby incubators were based on the ones that were used to keep farm chicks (baby chickens) alive. The basic design was a wooden box with two sections. In the lower part of the box there are bottles of hot water that heat the air around them, producing an upward stream of warm air (orange arrows). A sponge hung in the stream of air humidifies it, with the air exiting through a conduit at top (blue arrows). This design of incubator dates from the 1880s. | |
