European-Extremely Large Telescope. Computer illustration of the planned European-Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) on top of the Cerro Amazones mountain in the Atacama Desert, Chile. When completed, this optical/infrared telescope will have a 42 metre diameter primary mirror, the largest on Earth, and will be used to study extrasolar planets, super-massive black holes and dark matter. The contract for its construction was signed at a ceremony in Germany on 25th May 2016 and the E-ELT should be operational by 2018. | |
