Plant parenchyma cell nucleus (arum or voodoo lily, Sauromatum guttatum), transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Note the nucleus, nucleolus and condensed chromatin. Surrounding the nucleus is the amyloplast with starch grains and mitochondria. This plant's inflorescences last for only a few hours to a day and give off an unpleasant smell. The inflorescence disperses its odour by heating up. Beetle pollinators visit the flower due to the smell. Magnification: x1, 760 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
