19th C Druze during Mount Lebanon civil war. 1861 illustration of a group of Druzim outside Deir al-Qamar, Lebanon, during the Mount Lebanon civil war. The Druze are an esoteric ethnoreligious group originating in Western Asia who revere Moses' father-in-law Jethro of Midian, as their spiritual founder and chief prophet. In 1860 the Mount Lebanon civil war erupted between the Druze and Maronites, beginning as a rebellion of Maronite peasants against their Druze overlords. During the fighting, the town of Deir al-Qamar was set ablaze and destroyed. | |
