Submandibular gland parenchyma, light micrograph. The submandibular (or submaxillary) gland is a mixed salivary gland with serous predominance. As this micrograph shows, the secretory component of this gland is formed by very abundant serous tubule-acini and a small amount of mixed tubule-acini, several of which can be seen in the image as pale structures, less stained than the serous tubule-acini . In the intralobulary excretory duct system, the submandibular gland is characterized by the strong development of striated ducts, of which several examples appear in the image.
