Light micrograph showing one of the features of the senile involution of the pineal gland: glial scars. They appear as clear regions of variable size, devoid of pinealocytes. They are formed by the second cell type of the pineal parenchyma, the glial cells. Glial scars of the pineal gland have the same features of scars that form astrocytes in central nervous system (CNS) lesions. Near the glial scar, several calcium concretions (corpora arenacea, brain sand) can be observed with the typical blackberry shape. Magnification: x90 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
