Parathyroid gland of a child, light micrograph. Unlike other endocrine glands, the parathyroid glands show remarkable changes in their appearance according to the individual's age. In the first years of life, the gland presents a compact aspect, with a parenchyma formed exclusively by chief cells that are arranged forming cords between which there are narrow connective tissue spaces occupied almost exclusively by capillaries. No oxyphylic cells are observed and there are no adipocytes in the connective tissue septa. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
