High magnification light micrograph showing heart myocytes longitudinally sectioned. The cross-striation of the myofibrils, the central position of the nucleus, and the intercalated discs at the junctions between myocytes are clearly show. On both sides of the nuclei of the myocytes accumulate many yellowish granulations corresponding to lipofuscin (sign of cellular aging). Near the centre of the image there is a short extension of a myocyte. The small elongated and dark nuclei between the myocytes are fibroblasts or endothelial cells of the blood vessels. Magnification: x900 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
