Cross-sectioned diaphysis of a long bone, viewed under a polarised light microscope. Osteons, or Haversian systems, consist of a series of bony lamellae, which appear as narrow concentric bands, around a central space known as a Haversian canal. Due to the arrangement of the collagen fibres in each bone lamella, there are alternating bright and dark lines. Between the osteons are interstitial lamellae, which also include bright and dark bony lamellae. Magnification: x90 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
