False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing three stages of normoblast maturation. Normoblasts are nucleated precursors of red blood cells (erythrocytes). The bottom cell (yellow) shows many cytoplasmic ribosomes and a nucleus with heterochromatin. The central cell shows a condensed nucleus (pink) with clumped chromatin and fewer cytoplasmic ribosomes. The cell at right (brown) is probably a normoblast that has extruded its nucleus. This cell is an immature red blood cell or reticulocyte, which show few cytoplasmic ribosomes. | |
