Holy Land pilgrimage galley. Illustration of a medieval Venetian galley used for pilgrimages to the Holy Land (mostly modern Israel, Palestine, and Jordan). The galley used sails, with the oars used in still air, and in confined spaces. At left is the flag of the Republic of Venice, a sovereign state and maritime republic from the 8th to the 18th centuries. Venice was a major embarkation point for pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The use of galleys for such pilgrimages reached a peak in the 14th century and declined thereafter. | |
