Death of fossil hominin 'Lucy'. Illustration of the theory that the hominin 'Lucy', known through the discovery of her fossil remains, died in a fall from a tree. 'Lucy' is an example of the hominin Australopithecus afarensis. The 'Lucy' specimen was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia between 1973 and 1977. She dates from 3.3 million years ago, and is one of the earliest links in the human fossil record. The form of the bones and teeth showed her to be female, 20 years old, and between 107 and 122 centimetres tall. | |
