Light micrograph of a liver with macrovesicular steatosis (fatty liver). Many hepatocytes (liver cells) show one or two big fat droplets that distend the hepatocyte displacing the nucleus (dark purple). The most common cause of this condition is heavy alcohol consumption, which disturbs normal fat metabolism. It can also be caused by toxins, diabetes and pregnancy. Steatosis is reversible by treating the underlying cause. Stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Magnification: x360 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
