Light micrograph of fatty liver disease (steatosis). This condition leads to the accumulation of triglyceride fats (seen as white spaces) in liver cells. The most common cause is heavy alcohol consumption, which disturbs normal fat metabolism. It can also be caused by toxins, diabetes and pregnancy. Steatosis is reversible by treating the underlying cause. At bottom right of this image the hepatocytes are devoid of fat but many of them show binucleation or polyploid nuclei. Stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
