The Bolinder marine engine was in a vessel that was wrecked off the coast of Iceland. It was salvaged after 70 years of submersion in salt water and stands in the grounds of a small museum. The cast iron cylinder head is severely corroded and flaking. Iron rusts more quickly in seawater as a result of electrochemical reactions. The iron oxides take up more room than the metal and the resulting expansion creates enormous forces that tear the metal apart. Maritime Museum, Hellissandur, Iceland | |
