US Coast Guard long range navigation (LORAN) station in the southwest Pacific, during World War II. This radio navigation system was developed by the USA during World War II. It used low frequencies, which are able to bounce off the ionosphere at night and so provide coverage beyond the horizon. LORAN was widely used in the Pacific War for both ships and aircraft. | |
