Shifting water snowline, exoplanet research. This illustration shows how the outburst of a young star has displaced a marker called the water-snow line, making it more detectable. This star is V883 Orionis, a protostar 1350 light years from Earth in the constellation of Orion. As a newly formed star, it is currently in outburst mode (bottom), compared to the non-outburst mode (top). The water-snow line is the point where the temperature and pressure are the right level for water-ice to form. This tipping point affects the type and habitability of planets that form.
