The dolerite cliffs of Alkefjellet, Spitsbergen, Svalbard, are home to tens of thousands of seabirds, mainly guillemots. They nest in the cliffs, safe from foxes and polar bears. The dark dolerite rock is a sill, a mass of molten magma that intruded between layers of limestone from the carboniferous period. | |
