Saturn in 1911, stereoscopic card. These are paired stereoscopic images which provide a 3D image (stereogram) when viewed side-by-side. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun, with its rings visible here. Saturn orbits the Sun at an average distance of 1.4 billion kilometres. Closer and more detailed observations of Saturn were not made until spacecraft visited the planet in 1979, 1980 and 1981. Image obtained with the 5-foot reflecting telescope at the Solar Observatory of the Carnegie Institution at Mount Wilson, California, USA, on 19 November 1911, by US astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard (1857-1923) of the Yerkes Observatory, Chicago, USA.
