Breast cancer surgery using gamma camera. Close-up of surgeons using a gamma camera (enclosed in plastic for sterility) during surgery on breast cancer in an 80-year-old woman. This technique uses the gamma camera during the operation to locate radioactive tracers implanted in the cancerous tissue before the operation. This technique, combined with the use of guide wires implanted under ultrasound examination, and X-rays to check the location of the cancer and guide devices, allows the surgeons to correctly locate and excise the malignant tumours. The radioactive tracer used here was technetium-99. This surgery also involved operating on the cancer's sentinel lymph node (in this case, in the armpit). Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. | |
