Fruit fly, illustration. The common fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) feeds on fruit, vegetables and fermenting products. The American entomologist Charles Woodworth (1865-1940) proposed using D. melanogaster as a model organism. Since then the fruit fly has been widely used in various fields of biological research. One of the advantages of this organism is high reproductive rate, which allows researchers to monitor experimental results over a number of generations. | |
