Eye disease following shingles infection. Close-up the eye of a 93-year-old male patient affected by band keratopathy and iritis (inflammation of the iris) following shingles (herpes zoster) 2 months earlier. Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, which lies dormant in the nerves after causing chicken pox. A shingles rash is limited to the area of skin supplied by the nerve in which the virus lay dormant. Band keratopathy is the appearance of calcium on the central cornea.
