Sun and TRAPPIST-1 dwarf star. Illustration comparing the sizes of the Sun (left) and the ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 (right). The Sun has a diameter of 1.39 million kilometres, while TRAPPIST-1 has a diameter of 162, 793 kilometres, just over a tenth the size and similar to that of Jupiter. The dwarf star is much redder and cooler than the Sun. The TRAPPIST-1 system has been studied using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the ground-based TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope), with seven Earth-sized planets discovered in 2015 and 2017. TRAPPIST-1 is 39 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquarius. Image published in 2017. | |
