TRAPPIST-1 planets. Illustrations comparing the habitable zone (green) of Earth's Solar System (bottom) with that of the TRAPPIST-1 system (top). The sizes of the planets are correctly to scale, but the ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 is about the size of Jupiter, and its planetary system has been enlarged 25 times here. Three planets (e, f, g) in the TRAPPIST-1 system are in its habitable zone, with liquid water potentially on their surfaces. Venus and Mars are on the edge of the Solar System's habitable zone. The TRAPPIST-1 system has been studied using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the ground-based TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope). TRAPPIST-1 is 39 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquarius. The planets were discovered in 2015 and 2017. Image published in 2017. | |
