A male Wodaabe dancer performing the Yaake line dance during the annual week-long Guerewol or Gerewol ceremony in Chad. These lengthy dancing and singing rituals, by the male suitors, are performed to attract the attention of marriageable young women, who are impressed by stamina and physical attractiveness. Tallness, white eyes and teeth are physical attributes highly prized by the Wodaabe. The male suitors often drink a fermented bark brew, which is purported to have hallucination effects, to enhance their stamina as these celebrations take place in the Sahel, where daytime temperatures are high. | |
