Hookworm. Illustration of a hookworm sucking blood from the wall of the small intestine. Hookworms are nematode worms which are parasites of the small intestines of cats, dogs and humans. Human infestation begins with larvae penetrating the skin, usually by burrowing into the feet and entering the bloodstream. They migrate into the lungs and trachea and are swallowed into the digestive system where they mature and feed on blood. Heavy infection with hookworm can result in anaemia. | |
