Mammograms for breast cancer surgery. Mammograms (breast X-rays) of the right-hand breast of an 80-year-old woman with breast cancer. The two central X-rays are on the breast before the insertion of a guide wire, which is shown in the other two X-rays. The guide wire was inserted under ultrasound examination to localise the tumour prior to surgery. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Early diagnosis can be made by mammography or self-examination. The cancer can be effectively treated by surgery followed by a course of radiotherapy or anti-cancer drugs to destroy any remaining cancerous cells. | |
