First detection of carbon dioxide at a comet. Composite image showing the Anhur site on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko that was targeted by the VIRTIS (visible, infrared and thermal imaging spectrometer) instrument on NASA's Rosetta satellite, and the data recorded that showed the presence of solid (frozen) carbon dioxide. This 80 x 60 metre region was observed on 21-22 March 2016. This was the first detection of solid carbon dioxide at any comet. | |
