Japanese Kamikaze attack on USS Missouri Japanese Kamikaze plane diving on USS Columbia during the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf, Philippines, during World War II. This plane hit the main deck by the after gun turret, causing extensive damage and casualties. Kamikaze attacks were suicide attacks carried out by Japanese pilots flying specially adapted aircraft carrying a combination of explosives, bombs, torpedoes and full fuel tanks. They were designed to destroy warships more effectively than was possible with conventional attacks. The Invasion of Lingayen Gulf was an Allied amphibious operation that took place from 6-9th January 1945. Photographed on 6th January 1945. | |
