Baseball-sized hailstone. The hailstone formed as smaller hailstones fused and froze in the massive updrafts of a storm supercell. Such large hailstones can do considerable damage to livestock and property as well as represent a direct risk to human life. Aeroplanes can also face strikes from such large ice masses during flight. Climate change is thought to make the occurence of such 'freak' events more common. Photographed on 24 May 2016, in south-eastern Kansas, USA. | |
