Hapalops ground sloths, illustration. Hapalops was smaller than the giant Megatherium, and so may have been able to climb trees. It reached lengths of just under one metre. The ground sloth in the background is feeding on insects in a tree. A juvenile is on all fours in the foreground. Hapalops lived during the Late Oligocene and the Miocene (from around 28 million to 5 million years ago). It was found in what is now Patagonia in South America. | |
