19th Century soda locomotive. 1884 cutaway illustration showing the interior of the boiler of a soda locomotive on a tramway. Soda locomotives were a variant of fire-less locomotive. Instead, the boiler was surrounded with a jacket containing caustic soda. The reaction of water and/or steam with the caustic soda produced enough heat run the boiler and generate more steam. The steam was used to drive the locomotive and the exhaust steam was then recycled into the jacket to continue the cycle until the caustic soda became too dilute to work efficiently. | |
