Gustave Charpentier (1860-1956). 1901 illustration of the French composer Gustave Charpentier. Charpentier is best known for his 1900 opera Louise that depicts Paris and Parisian working-class life. He founded the Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson in 1902, with the intention to provide a free artistic education to Paris's working girls. During World War I, he started the Oeuvre de Mimi Pinson and Cocarde de Mimi Pinson to aid wounded soldiers. He was awarded the Legion d'honneur in 1900, became a Commandeur in 1930, and a Grand Officier in 1950. | |
