Francois-Noel Babeuf (1760-1797). 1874 illustration of the French political agitator and journalist Francois-Noel 'Gracchus' Babeuf. Babeuf was active during the French Revolutionary Period (1789-1799). He is best-known for his newspaper 'Le tribun du peuple' (the tribune of the people), which in which he advocated for the poor and called for a popular revolt against the Directory, the government of France. He was a leading advocate for democracy and was executed on 27th May 1797 for his role in the Conspiracy of the Equals. | |
