Large Magellanic Cloud, annotated image. Combined optical and infrared image of the irregular dwarf galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), around 170, 000 light years away in the constellations of Dorado and Mensa. Some of the brightest objects, nebulae and starbirth regions are marked with labels. The brightest patch is the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070, lower centre). The box at upper left is centred on the Bean Nebula (N11). The LMC is about 50, 000 light years wide. Visible in the skies of the southern hemisphere, this galaxy is part of the Local Group of galaxies that includes the Milky Way. Image data obtained from the Digitized Sky Survey 2 (DSS 2). The field of view is about ten degrees across. | |
