Cocoa fruit ripening on a cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). Cocoa beans are extracted from these pods. The leathery pod, which turns yellow or red when ripe, contains up to 60 beans embedded in a soft pulp. These are dried, roasted and ground to produce cocoa powder, which is then used to make chocolate. Photographed on a cocoa plantation, Palo Blanco, Piura, Peru. | |
