Pilot in the cockpit of a plane using blind landing technology, Washington D.C., USA, 1937. Blind landings presented one of the biggest difficulties to aviation. The instrument landing system (ILS) located above the panel in the centre enabled aircraft to land in zero visibility. Instrument landing systems provide precision lateral and vertical guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and light beams. Tests of the ILS system began in 1929 in the United States. The first landing of a scheduled U.S. passenger airliner using ILS was in 1938. | |
