Congenital heart defects. Coloured X-ray of the chest of a 23-year-old woman who was born with congenital heart defects. These included transposition of the great vessels (TGV) and ventricular septal defect (VSD). The patient had operations as a child to treat these conditions. The valved stent visible on this X-ray (left of centre) was implanted to help the heart function despite the right ventricular hypertrophy which has developed progressively since childhood. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is where the myocardium (heart muscle) increases in size, seen on this X-ray as an enlarged heart. | |
