James Leonard Hanberry, yellow fever volunteer. In 1898 James Hanberry, a 22-year-old private in the US Army, was assigned to the Hospital Corps in Cuba. He volunteered, with others, for an experiment conducted by Walter Reed into the causes and transmission of yellow fever. He contracted the disease and almost died. Other volunteers did die as a result of the experiment, which was successful in identifying the mosquito as the vector. Hanberry was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1929. He died in 1961 at the age of 86. | |
