Balancing rocks, remnants of a laccolith, Grapevine Hills, Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA. A laccolith is a mushroom-shaped body of igneous rock which intrudes between rock strata. Here, the intrusive rock was exposed by erosion due to its greater resistance to weathering than the surrounding rock. As it cooled the igneous rock broke up into pieces, some of which appear precariously balanced. | |
