Leaf surface stomata from the Ohia Lehua tree (Metrosideros polymorpha), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Stomata (plural of stoma) are tiny openings in the epidermis of a plant that are surrounded by pairs of crescent-shaped cells, called guard cells, that facilitate gas exchange. Ohia Lehua is Hawaii's most abundant native tree. It is often the first tree life to appear after a lava flow. It can survive in a many environments, including elevations between 1, 000 and 9, 000 feet above sea level. It is a hardwood that was used by ancient Hawaiians to carve temple idols, canoes, poi bowls and spears. Magnification: x140 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
