Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Walkingstick egg case (Lopaphus caesius). Phasmids (stick or leaf insects) are typically either stick-like or leaf-like which provides them with excellent camouflage or mimicry. Phasmatodea can be found all over the world except for the Antarctic and Patagonia. They are most numerous in the tropics and subtropics. They are herbivorous and can be agricultural pests. Note the operculum (cap) that comes off when the insect egg hatches. Magnification: x5 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
